  • The delimiting character is most commonly the slash ("/"), the backslash character ("\"), or colon (":"), though some operating systems may use a different delimiter.
  • It is also possible to form identifiers by using Unicode sequences (including whitespace) enclosed by either straight (' ') or standard (‘ ’) single quotes, where the backslash is the escape character.
  • The first half (Roman set) of JIS X 0201 constitutes a Japanese variant of ISO 646, amounting to ASCII with backslash (\) and tilde (~) replaced by yen (¥) and overline (‾), while the second half (Kana set) consists mainly of katakana.
  • Creating a raw string holding a Windows path ending with a backslash requires some variety of workaround (commonly, using forward slashes instead of backslashes, since Windows accepts both).
  • The 7-bit ASCII subset for the Japanese version is non-standard: it supplies a Yen symbol where the backslash character is normally found, and left and right arrow symbols in place of tilde and the rubout character.
  • For every sublevel in which a backslash is contained, it must be escaped for the level above it, and then all the backslashes used to escape that backslash as well as the original backslash, must be escaped, and so on and so forth for every level that is ascended.
  • Literals are represented as printable ASCII strings (with backslash escapes), delimited with double-quote characters, and optionally suffixed with a language or datatype indicator.
  • Encodings which combine KS X 1001 with single-byte ASCII may use alternative Unicode mapping to the Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms block for the backslash.
  • An additional supplementary set registered as ISO-IR-93 assigns the pound sign (£), universal currency sign (¤) and section sign (§) to their ISO-8859-1 codepoints, and the backslash to the ISO-8859-1 codepoint for the Yen sign.
