  • They are infundibulate in the lower part, somewhat ventricose at two-fifths of their height, and widened towards the mouth.
  • They are shortly infundibular in the lower part, slightly ventricose for around a third of their height, and wholly tubulose in the upper part.
  • Based on Schmid-Höllinger's observations, they are ventricose in the lower parts and elongated above, becoming tubiform or slightly infundibuliform towards the mouth.
  • The cystidia on the gill edge (cheilocystidia) measures 23–28 x 4–7 μm, ventricose to flash shaped, often capitate.
  • Viewed with a microscope, the spores are slightly oblong to ventricose in face view; in profile view, the spores are roughly inequilateral to oblong, and have a shallow suprahilar depression.
  • In mycology, ventricose is a condition in which the cystidia, lamella or stipe of a mushroom is swollen in the middle.
  • The pleurocystidia are either enlarged in the middle (ventricose) or enlarged and spherical at the tip (capitate); these cells have dimensions of 35–45 by 8–11 μm.
  • The pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia (cystidia found on the face and edge of a gill, respectively) are similar in structure and abundant, ventricose with long, rather narrow necks, and measure 46–62 by 9–14 μm.
  • The pileocystidia (cystidia located on the cap surface) are hyaline, (8‒) 10‒30 (‒40) × (4‒) 5‒7 (‒10) μm and have very irregular forms - globose, subglobose, capitate or ventricose.
  • The pleurocystidia (cystidia on the gill face) are ventricose (swollen) near the base and often mucronate (ending abruptly in a short sharp point) at the apex, and measure 14–25 by 4.
  • The lower whorls are suturally impressed just below the sutures, at the summit of each whorl, once spirally acutely keeled, the remaining portion being rather ventricose, longitudinally obliquely multicostate, crossed by, on the four penultimate whorls, three to five spiral revolving lines, gemmulate at the several points of junction with the ribs.
  • All the whorls are ventricose, impressed, and spirally plainly ridged suturally, and crossed by strongly developed spirals, swollen and almost becoming nodulous at the points of junction with the costae.
  • The small, thin, delicate shell has a pale brown or white, fusiform spire, either very attenuate, or pagodiform, or broader, and ventricose, always much suturally impressed.
  • The body whorl is ventricose, radiately costellate above, with three acute elevated median spiral cinguli, beneath with obsolete concentric striae.
  • Pleurocystidia (cystidia on the tube faces) are rare to scattered, 28–37 by 9–15 μm, fusoid (somewhat spindle-shaped) to ventricose, and have a somewhat sharp tip.
  •  auriflammeus, but several features of the former species can distinguish it from the latter: an orange to brownish-orange or brownish-yellow cap; a yellow to apricot or orange stem with tawny to reddish-brown streaks that do not stain fingers when handled; yellow flesh that darkens when exposed or injured; ventricose or ventricose-rostrate (swollen in the middle with a narrow tip) cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia; and hyphae in the cap cuticle that lack bright yellow encrusted crystals.
  • The production of slimy, orange- to salmon-colored colonies on short adelophialides (phialides lacking a basal septum) with cylindrical collarettes can be quite distinct, with ventricose phialide formations less frequent.
  • It is on the body whorl alone, which is slightly effusely ventricose, that these gemmules appear, which are extremely beautiful microscopic objects.
  • Gills: Free, crowded, swollen in the middle (ventricose) and white discolouring to orange or browny yellow when dry.
  • Zafra melitoma differs in its ventricose whorls, thick ribs, smooth, excepting where crossed by slender lirae towards the base of the body whorl, and golden-yellow colour.
